LUCAS & KING

A chance encounter with the paintings of Courtney King, and the realisation  that there was a strong accord in our focus on the effects of time and age on aspects of the landscape, led to our interest in working together.

When designing my vessels I pay particular attention to things washed smooth by the action of the sea and surfaces eroded by wind and rain.

Courtney’s response to the landscape and its flora conveys a strong sense of ancient timeless nature. Her studies of battered leaves and charred surfaces evoke the raw power of the sparse landscape of this country.

Using a multi-layered approach, Courtney manipulates oxides and stains across the ceramic surface to record memories of wild places and sensory experiences. Swollen and curvaceous forms serve as a place for mingling intention with experimentation and improvisation. Her personal visual language of colour and mark making transform functional vessels into objects that project themselves into another realm. The vessels become mysterious and hint at processes of decay and destruction. They create a sense of place in conversation with memory, imagination, truth and beauty.
